Grace
When you look up the word grace in Christian terms, you generally find it defined as “God’s favor toward the unworthy” or “ God’s benevolence on the undeserving.” Ephesians 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 2 Timothy 1:9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace.…
My Go-To Scripture
As I sit here writing this devotional, I think of how many times I ponder my go-to Scripture. We each have several, but I have one that steps out in front of the others. The Scripture is: John 14:1- Don’t let your heart be troubled. You Believe in God; believe also in me. I know. You hear it at every Memorial. It was spoken at all three Memorials in June. In fact, at my ordination review, Reverend Jim Clifton, ask…

1 Timothy 4:12-Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Timothy was a young man who desired to serve the Lord yet he had certain weaknesses that hindered his confidence. Young is relative! I consider myself young in the wholeness of life, but when I hear this verse, I automatically think of my children. How can I as a parent…
Pentecost Sunday
We pull into the upper parking lot at Church. Wyatt backs into the same parking space he always does. The gentleman at the door, is 99 ½ years young. We will call him Winfree. As soon as Winfree sees us, he rises from his chair to hold the door open for us. I could call him a door man or a greeter, but he is so much more than that. We go in to say hello to the early morning…
Be Still
It is Saturday, and as I write this devotional-the second one. It’s kind of like last week. I had a sermon all written out for Sunday and the Holy Spirit is telling me this isn’t the sermon I want you to do. Ok, I get this. It happens to all Preachers, but now it’s Friday morning. I did have things running through my brain so that did make the new sermon much easier. These kinds of sermons are the best.…
Listening To That Still Small Voice!
I was driving down the street one day and suddenly the traffic slowed down considerably. I thought there must be an accident down the way. I didn’t see any flashing lights or hear any sirens. Like everyone else, we were slowly creeping forward. I started watching two boys and their dog. They were patiently trying to teach the dog how to get use to walking with a leash. The boy with the leash on the dog would line up the…
Forgive One Another
One of my favorite women in the Bible is Miriam. She is probably more like me. We first see her after Moses is born at the wrong time. The government is saying there are too many Israelites. Moses’ mother makes a basket, puts Moses in the basket, puts both in the Nile River, and has Miriam watch to see what happens. Pharaoh’s daughter sees the basket and discovers Moses inside Miriam is very brave and asks Pharaoh’s daughter if she…

I greet you all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and welcome us to the week of Christmas! I want to compile an acrostic for Christmas with scripture to accompany each word. C= Christ: “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is CHRIST the Lord. Luke 2:11 H= Highest Heaven: “Glory to God in the HIGHEST HEAVEN, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:14 R=…

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to reflect and meditate on all the many things we have to be thankful for as Christ followers. Here are some wonderful bible verses all about gratitude: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” 1 Chronicles 16:34 “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15 “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” Colossians…
SFNAZ Pastoral Search Update
Last Sunday I announced that Pastor John W. Morden will serve as our interim pastor. Arriving the first of September, Pastor Morden will minister to the congregation and will assist the Board in completing the search. His wife, Carole and he have three sons and seven grandchildren. He comes to us from the St. Louis area and is well-experienced in working with churches experiencing a senior pastoral change. One component of the search preparation is a “Church Assessment” which will…

On July 11 we started a new Sunday School Class that meets at 11:00AM in the Fireside Room on the book of Philippians. We began by reading Philippians in its entirety, aloud as a class, all four chapters in succession. Then we read together a brief summary of the Book of Philippians as follows: Philippians 1 – The Advancing Gospel, Philippians 2 – Imitate Christ, Philippians 3 – Pressing Onward, Philippians 4 – Rejoice in the Lord. To end our…
Letter From Your Church Board
Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6) This verse from Proverbs seems most appropriate as we, Spokane First Church of the Nazarene, enter into the search process for our next Senior Pastor. I am confident that the Lord has identified already our next spiritual leader. And now in the coming months, He will lead us to…
