SFNAZ Newsletter June 2026

Serving Self or Others?

Behold I give you a wise and discerning mind…And if you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days. (I Kings 3, 12,14)

Solomon ascends; David is deceased. The kingdom has been transferred in a mostly peaceful way. The enormity of the task of governance begins to dawn in Solomon’s mind. How can he do it? He needs help. And Solomon seeks help in the right way.

In a dream Solomon is given a choice, “Ask what I shall give you.” That question opened the door for him to enrich himself, empower himself, lengthen his days, or make himself wealthy. What then does he choose? His choice is to serve the people better. He asks for the ability to see what is best in all the perplexing situations he meets, so he can offer help to the people which are tangible and good.

If you know the story, you realize that this selflessness will not always remain, but at least for now, Solomon makes a good choice and God is pleased. I am convinced that God is always pleased when we choose to serve others over ourselves. I will add that it is just as difficult for us to stay focused on this servant’s path as it was for the young king. There are thousands of messages teaching us that it is right to serve ourselves. If we are to succeed at being a servant of others it will be because we work at it, rejecting the noise of the culture, and choosing instead to look, listen, and respond to the cries of hurting people near us.

Prayer for today:

Father, I commit to serving you and serving others in a way that honors you. Help me to seek goodness and please your heart as Solomon did. Help me to always be faithful to your heart and never be guided by selfish interests. Amen.
