The word healing is defined as the process of making or becoming sound. When the words to heal or healing are used many of us think of a physical state that needs to be made whole or fixed. The types of aliments that need to be healed, we will see the healing or know about it because they are outward needs. What about the need for healing that we don’t see? We have all known someone who is hurting emotionally or spiritually, maybe even you have been or are currently dealing with this type of healing. In those times there can be a sense of loneliness and rejection, and a longing for healing and being made whole.
There are many times Jesus healed others when He was walking on earth with His people, but the one that always sticks out to me is the bleeding woman who touched His garment and was healed. Her need was physical healing, but it was also emotional healing as well. Due to her health, she was rejected, looked at as unworthy or unclean by society around her. Although she had been cast aside and carried this horrible physical and emotional pain, she had such great faith that her Healer could make her whole, so she reached out to Him in desperation. She reached out and was healed.
Today I bring this story to your attention to remind you of a few things.
- If you are in need of healing, no matter if it is physical, emotional, or spiritual, you simply need to reach out to Him. When we are in a state of pain it is a vulnerable time, and we can become so inwardly focused that we forget that all we have to do is reach out. Healing is on God’s timing, and we may not understand the process, but we are not called to understand all things God does. There is a call to have faith in Him no matter what. It is that faith that carries us through the process of healing in which He decides it is needed.
- As God’s people we are to accept those who are in need of healing. This statement might seem odd to you as you may question, why wouldn’t I accept someone in need of healing? However, I challenge you to reflect on those around you and those in our community. Their need for healing may not be physical, but it could be emotional or spiritual. God calls us to love those who struggle with these areas. Their pain may look different than any you have dealt with in your life. The pain they carry may come from a way of life, or a culture you have never been exposed to, so in exchange you may overlook their need for healing. I challenge you to ask God to reveal those needs to you. We are the disciples who can bring those people to know Him and find the healing they have so desperately been seeking.
I want to leave you with the words Jesus said to the woman after he discovered she touched his garment.
Jesus said to her, “Daughter, you took a risk of faith, and now you’re healed and whole. Live well, live blessed! Be healed of your plague.” Mark 5:34 MSG
Take a risk of faith this week. Seek your own healing; seek where God wants you to help others in their healing process. Seek where God is challenging you to be uncomfortable enough in your faith that you can be a tool for His healing to grow in the lives of others.
Blessings,
Pastor Hope Terhaar
