Making Things Fit

A couple weeks ago I helped in the nursery with the tiny SFNAZ church kids. While it has been a long time since I have had a little one in my house, I was reminded of their unwavering desire to keep finding something new or making things fit where they don’t belong. While the babies were crawling around they kept getting a new toy out to play with, but they also kept coming back to the bucket with the shaped items; dumping them out and attempting to put back in the correct spot. Of course as they would try to shove the piece in the wrong spot, I would try to help them put in the correct shaped space. This happened over and over, even when I tried to put the bucket away they would still want to play with it and repeat the same behavior.

I share this story because many times even as adults we do this. Yet instead of a toy with shape sized holes we do it with things like our own will, and our own plans. We often try to make everything fit in our perfect little molds we have designed, yet we don’t always consider God’s plans or anticipate what is ahead of us. We just walk around confidently that our plan is going to work.  Just like the babies trying to shove the toy in the wrong slot over and over again, there are times in our life when we think we have it all figured out and we have a perfect plan to fit everything in.  It may be a plan for our family calendar, a plan for your children’s lives, or just our plan for the day, yet God is there watching and waiting. He is wondering why you didn’t clear that plan with him first. He is watching to see if you are going to call on him for the help you need, or better yet bring it to Him before you make the plans to begin with.  There are many times in life when we find ourselves trying to fit the wrong plans into the wrong time or place, and we end up frustrated or confused when it doesn’t all work out. The good news is that God is always there to rescue us in this situation, and to help make things fit. If we remember to make our Lord and Savior the ruler over the plans for our life, then we can move forward more confident in the future. This does not mean we won’t still have challenges that come, but the comfort and guidance from God is what makes those challenges bearable.

During this season we are in as a church are you ready to surrender all your plans to God?  Do you have personal plans or church plans that you haven’t checked with God about? Do you have today planned and you forgot to speak with Him to allow His will for your day?

I challenge you this week to continually ask yourself these questions. If you find that you need to make some changes, examine the path you have been on and find new ways to allow God to check your plans before you proceed further.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and

not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
