LETTER FROM PASTOR JOHN

Boldly proclaim the transforming love of Christ through acts of mercy and grace and His unconditional love.

1 Cor 9:19-23 NLT, “… I have become a servant of everyone so that I can bring them to Christ. 20 When I am with the Jews, I become one of them so that I can bring them to Christ. When I am with those who follow the Jewish laws, I do the same, even though I am not subject to the law, so that I can bring them to Christ. 21 When I am with the Gentiles who do not have the Jewish law, I fit in with them as much as I can. In this way, I gain their confidence and bring them to Christ. But I do not discard the law of God; I obey the law of Christ.

22 When I am with those who are oppressed, I share their oppression so that I might bring them to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone so that I might bring them to Christ. 23 I do all this to spread the Good News, and in doing so I enjoy its blessings.”

What is your take-away from this Scripture?

These two paragraphs, written by Paul, thousands of years ago, may very well capture the heart of what I believe is to be the mission of His church. To never lose sight of who we are in Christ, yet at the same time fitting in as much as possible, trying to find common ground with everyone so that we might bring them to Christ. That means His church will have to spend time with them, get to know them, and seek to understand their beliefs and perspectives on life, so that, at just the right time we can introduce Jesus into the conversation. Never losing sight that some plant, some water, and some harvest where they have never planted or watered. The harvest is ALWAYS up to Jesus!

If the church is to truly be in alignment with Christ it must embrace the truth that we, all of us, are to be on mission with Him. This is an undeniable truth. Matt 28:18-20, “Jesus came to (the disciples) and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

We’re to be the one’s going and making disciples. Instead, we have embraced a mindset that apparently doesn’t fully align with His by creating programs and events to get those still far from Jesus to come to us. And while it was somewhat successful for a time, that time has now passed.

So how are we to go and where are we to begin? Again, let’s look to Jesus’ commands.

Matt 22:37-39, Jesus (said): “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Then, just moments before His earthly departure He said this, “… you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”  Acts 1:8.

The where is to our neighbors, at least that is where we are to begin, and then, as the Spirit leads into our cities, country, and nations. The how begins with our absolute love and commitment, with all our heart, mind, and soul, for God and His Son, and in the power of the Holy Spirit. That is, being led by the Spirit and listening to the Spirit as He leads us into God’s Word and application of it.

It begins by simply introducing ourselves to our neighbors, whether they are across the street, working next to you, or living in the house down the road. Then, we’re to love like we would want to be loved. Earnestly desiring to build a friendship-type relationship with them, getting to know them and what their needs may be, reaching out to be there for them and to support them. To truly care about them as a child of God who just hasn’t experienced His transformational love yet. All the time praying for that moment in time when the opportunity to share your story of God’s love and grace may suddenly appear. At the same time, realizing it may not be you that has that opportunity to share Christ with them, or they may not ever attend SFNAZ, and both of those outcomes are OK. What matters is they are shown His mercy and grace and unconditional love by you with no strings attached.

BUT once they meet Jesus your friendship doesn’t end there. Look again at the great commission, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. This is when the discipling and mentoring really begins. This is a commitment to a friendship for life. And I truly believe it is what Jesus is calling each of us to when He calls us His disciples.

So, who is it the Spirit may be bringing to your mind for you to build a relationship with, so at some point, maybe months from now, they will meet Jesus and begin their own journey of faith in Christ Jesus?

Peace be with you,

Pastor John
