SFNAZ Newsletter 08/12/2021

Sunday, August 15, 2021

This week, Phil & Monica Carr will visit SFNAZ and share the wonderful things God is doing in Africa. They will be our guest speakers at 9:30am.

Phil and Monica Carr are global missionaries with the Church of the Nazarene and are currently serving on the Africa Central Field and living in Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Phil serves as the Field Education Coordinator and Clergy Development while Monica is serving as the Field SDMI (Discipleship) Coordinator. Monica has been active in teaching oral Bible storying, has worked in trauma healing, and enjoys ministering to street children through “Under the Bridge Ministry,” which was started by the local church. Phil’s focus is on education, leadership development, encouraging and mentoring the leaders of the street children ministry, starting a soccer ministry, and life style evangelism. They are praying for true transformation in this beautiful nation and across the Central Field.

Before serving on the Central Field, the Carr’s lived in Senegal, West Field Africa, for five years. While there, Phil served as Coordinator for Education and Clergy Development for the Anglophone countries on the Africa West Field. He served as the director of Nazarene Theological Institute (NTI), Senegal, as administrative assistant to the Field Strategy Coordinator, coordinating statistics across 18 districts, and as the Field Secretary. He made vision trips for starting a new work for the Church in The Gambia. Monica served as the Field Literature Coordinator, in discipleship ministries (SDMI), child sponsorship, and developed content for the field website (awfcon.org). She has written articles for several other Nazarene publications, enjoys teaching, and has a passion to learn and share Bible storying with those from oral cultures.

During their initial assignment, Phil served as the Ministries Coordinator for Ghana on the Africa West Field from 2005 to 2010. He organized Theological Education and taught in three districts. He worked to develop key national leaders to lead the church forward. He also served as the Jesus Film Coordinator for the field. Monica served as Academic Dean and Field Education Coordinator for Nazarene Theological Institute (NTI) which provides pastoral training across the field in multiple countries and languages. She worked with a leadership team to develop, revise, and submit for approval the courses that NTI currently offers. Monica has a Master’s degree from California State University Stanislaus. She formerly taught high school and college English. Her experience also includes children’s and women’s ministries. Phil has a MA in History and a Masters of Divinity.

From September 2010 until August 2013 the Carrs were on extended leave of absence for Phil to complete a Masters of Divinity and be close to aging parents.

The Carr’s vision is to make Christ-like disciples, and develop national leaders who are passionate to change their world for Christ. They consider it a great privilege to be called by God to serve in Africa through The Church of the Nazarene. They love their African brothers and sisters and have learned so much from them. They are scheduled to retire as missionaries in January 2022 and desire to continue to serve in ministry and be available to speak on behalf of Nazarene missions after their retirement.

Phil and Monica have three children: Phillip (25 years old), Emily (22 years old) and Sarah (20 years old).
