Cleanliness is Next to Godliness, and Other “Bible” Sayings

The Bible is the most popular book of all time. One book that has been read in whole or in part by people for thousands of years. Sixty-six books all of which we describe as “God breathed,” inspired, and good for instruction and guidance for all of us. Moms and dads have been using quotes from the Bible throughout the generations to provide the authority for their teaching so their children and grandchildren would be able to grasp healthy, and holy principles that would shape their character.

“Eat what’s set before you,” they said, somehow making a child think no matter how detestable the broccoli seems, God commands it to be deposited in one’s stomach. (Which really isn’t a problem if you can get it past your tongue.) That verse is in the Bible, lifted from 1 Corinthians 10:27 (though I’m fairly sure it didn’t have much to do with broccoli). There are a host of other quotes which are attributed to the Bible that are simply not in there. We believe they are, because for generations we have thought that’s where a quote or a principle came from.

This summer we are going to be investigating together the origin of some of these famous quotes. On June 22, 2025, we will look for this one— “God will not give you more than you can handle.” Some of the other phrases we’ll look into are:

  • The truth will set you free
  • Everything happens for a reason
  • Another one bites the dust
  • The handwriting is on the wall
  • God needed them more
  • Fight the good fight
  • God helps those who help themselves

These are just a few of the quotes we will be checking out over the course of the summer. Some of these quotes are in the Bible and have some important lessons to be discovered. Some are not in the Bible at all and while they have a ring of truth to them, should not be given the same weight as a verse from the Bible. Let’s discover together what the Bible says. Oh, by the way, while cleanliness was certainly a characteristic God taught the people of Israel, the phrase, “Cleanliness is next to godliness,” yeah, that’s not in the Bible.

Prayer for today: Father, teach me your ways. Open your Word to my life and my heart to its wisdom so I may learn your will and grow in your ways. Amen

Blessings,

Pastor Wes
