Date Night

Date Night

1 Peter 3:8

Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.

There was a season in our lives together that Cas and I went out on a date once each week. I looked forward to those times when we would sit across the table from each other and allow the conversation to flow easily from one subject to another, laughing, listening, learning, and growing. We had kids in the house and the demands on our time even in the home were a constant din. These mostly breakfast dates were a refreshing reprieve from the demands of our lives.

As seasons changed, our habit of date nights also changed. We started doing dinners at the house. We’d pick a night when our remaining son was gone, and we’d plan to play a game (she ALWAYS wins grrrr), or re-watch a favorite movie, or pull out some conversation cards after our meal that encouraged and directed our minds toward creating the oneness that God desired us to have.

On our last vacation we realized that we had unintentionally lost the weekly rhythm of date nights, that it had evaporated because our calendar had appointments and meetings which had crowded out our time together. We also discovered that too often a quiet moment in our home meant that we were scrolling through our chosen social media feed, completely separate.

Date night is being put on our calendar now and we are creating intentional times when it’s just us, no phones, no grandkids, no distractions, just us. As you read this and realize it’s been a while since you’ve shared intentional time with your spouse, I would encourage you to block out some time and ask your spouse out on a date. Remember, recall, dream, imagine, listen, learn, share, and discover together the reasons God drew you together in the first place.

Prayer for today:

Father, thank you for the gift of my spouse. In the normal rhythm of our lives allow us the joy of intentional time as we become the marriage you desire. Allow for the time we set to accomplish in us the beauty of your presence. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Wes
