A while back a movie was recommended to me called “The Walk”. It told the true story of a French high wire artist by the name of Philippe Petit, who, in 1974 became the only human, that has ever “scaled the immense void between the World Trade Center towers”. You read that correctly! Mr. Petit, along with a team of accomplices, was able to covertly suspend a high wire between the towers and successfully traverse it, not once, but 8 times! His planning had to be precise as he faced countless details, such as the swaying of the towers from wind, that any miscalculation could mean certain death! Petit had to possess unwavering faith in himself and his ability that simply seems unreal!
Could I have faith like that?
That seems like a tall challenge. But I realize that it’s not really about the size of my faith that matters, but rather the object of that faith. Thankfully, I have a bible that promises me that I can have unwavering faith in God my creator! Unwavering faith is the kind of faith that trusts God no matter what. It doesn’t falter when challenges arise or when prayers seem unanswered. It’s a faith that knows that God is in control, and even when we don’t understand His plan, we trust that He is good and that His purposes will prevail.
Unwavering faith has confidence that God can handle the doubts, challenges and questions that we all face every day. Often, we feel that we must have enormous amounts of faith and belief in order to see God move. However, we are reminded by Jesus in Matthew 17:20 that even faith as small as a mustard seed can accomplish mighty things! Why? Because once again, it’s not the size or perfection of my faith, but the object I place it in!
We can have unwavering faith because God is faithful to keep His promises. His Word assures us that He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5), and that His plans for us are good! (Jeremiah 29:11). When we face challenges, we can endure because our faith is not in the situation but in a faithful God who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13, Isaiah 41:10, 2 Corinthians 12:10, Ephesians 3:16, Colossians 1:11, Psalm 46:1…. the list goes on and on!).
Phillipe Petit had to have an almost inhuman amount of faith in himself and his abilities! And really, faith despite the changing variables that he couldn’t control but could only plan for. I admire him. But I am thankful that my faith in God can truly be unwavering because it is not in me and my imperfections, but in Jesus, “the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross.” (Hebrews 12:2)
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for your unwavering faithfulness. Help me to have unwavering faith in you, trusting that you are in control of every situation. Strengthen me in times of difficulty and remind me of your promises when my heart feels weak. Give me the courage to step out in obedience, knowing that nothing is impossible with you!
Blessings,
Pastor Jordan
