Family of God

Romans12:5

So we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

Growing up there was a song that we often repeated: I’m so glad I’m a part of the family of God, washed in the fountain, cleansed by His blood. Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod. For I’m part of the family, the family of God.

Since I heard it so often, I really didn’t think of the significance of belonging to the family as much as I should have. I was a part of a large family, one made up of seven children. Our home was noisy, somewhat chaotic, very busy. At the helm was my worthy, and loving mother, bringing order through careful management of resources, and skillful division of labor.

There were times when I resented the chores and the lack of quietness that made up the fabric of my childhood, yet there were lessons I learned which I’m not sure I could have, had I not been a part of such a family. I since have placed high value on the varied contribution of my siblings and the benefit they continue to bring to my life even now.

Our mother taught us to live selfless, not caring what good might come to her. She was an incessant servant to her children; and through the gift of herself we witnessed something beautiful—the value of being a part of a family.

I’ve been thinking much about this as we enter this new series which will focus on the gift of the family and the picture we are offered through the family of God. The church is made up of quirky and flawed people, I’m one of those. But when we embrace this family, we’re a part of and fashion our lives to reflect the selfless love of our Savior Jesus, and the gracious care of Father, something beautiful happens. We serve and are served through the beauty of the care of our brothers and sisters and the glory of Jesus comes into clear view.

Prayer for today:

Father, thank you for making me a part of this family, for adopting me, redeeming me, forgiving me, and accepting me through the gift of Jesus and his blood shed for me. Help me to be as gracious as you are and as ready to serve those who have been placed in this family with me, as well as those you still desire to adopt into your home with us. Amen
