Run Well

Run Well

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1,2 (NKJV)

The Olympics allow us to see the athletes who are considered the very best in the world competing on the biggest stage. For a brief moment, one of them will stretch the limits of human ability to ascend the podium standing on the top tier and receiving the honor of a medal placed about their neck, gold, flashing in brilliance as the anthem of their nation and the flag of their homeland rises in the arena in their honor.

It’s a moment that allows for the years of diligent preparation, careful attention to diet, brutal workouts, daily stretches, submitting to coaching, daring to dream it possible, all culminate in a highlight to be cherished and remembered. Often this moment will be captured and superimposed on a Wheaties box to grace the table where children dream of becoming like them, daring to dream the same dream they once did.

It’s this same ethos that the writer of Hebrews captures after he finishes chapter 11, an amazing review of the faithful men and women through history. Starting with Abel, the writer tells of people who dared to be faithful and for their reward were named in the halls of those who trusted God and put their hope and faith in him.

It is those faithful who make up the grandstand, a cheering throng who surround us. We runners are to be faithful, just as they were faithful. We’re running amid the cheering throng. There’s something different about this race though, than the Olympics, because it’s not just one runner that wins the prize; every faithful runner will be rewarded. Keep your eyes on Jesus. Not only does he teach us how to run, but he is our prize. It is his embrace at the end of our race that will thrill our heart with joy and meaning much more than a golden medal ever could.

Prayer for today:

Father, help me to run well and finish my race strong. I commit to keep my focus on you. You are my prize. You are my example. Keep me strong as I keep my eyes on you. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Wes
